I’ve been friends with Jodie Burton of @travelyogadance_ for many years now – she and my husband used to run outdoor expeditions together back when we lived in Melbourne. Now that we all live back down in Torquay, Victoria, we’ve reconnected and I adore her yoga classes. She’s an incredible teacher – she brings a unique blend of humour, excellent cueing and knowledge of physiology, warmth and down-to-earth nature that makes everyone feel welcome.
She also runs retreats through her business Kindred Journeys. They are hosting a beautiful retreat in the Byron Bay Hinterlands in May 2025.
When planning her yoga brand photography session, it was really important that her photos didn’t look like every other yoga teacher’s photos. She’s not one for posing on a mountain top (although she’s climbed many), so the photos needed to reflect her warmth, humour, and not-taking-herself-too-seriously – because that’s what she’s like. We wanted the colours of sunrise against the cliffs of Point Addis, the sparkle of sunshine through the water, the greens of the eucalypts to come through. The Surf Coast natural coastline has influenced her brand’s colour palette, and she’s a great lover of the outdoors, so it made narrative and aesthetic sense to capture her yoga personal branding photos outside at this beautiful beach on the Great Ocean Road. We used a mix of 35mm film and digital photography to capture the textures and colours of the coast.
I have been SO impressed with how many photographs Jodie has already shared from her session! She’s been using the negative space in the images to add text headings that pre-empt the content of her posts, and they’re always something that communicates her values and approach to yoga teaching.
