Shawnigan Lake and Cobble Hill have the most vibrant fall colours every autumn! It only lasts a couple of weeks but the variety of yellow, orange, red and brown leaves is wild. When I do outdoor family photography sessions, I like there to be an activity or focus to help us tell a story, and to get everybody relaxed and playful – which is where the leaves come in. Throwing them, hiding behind them, jumping in piles of them, holding them up to the light… if you have ever felt awkward in front of a camera but really want lovely photos of your family, consider doing a family session outdoors during the Fall on Vancouver Island. For this session, I met up with the lovely Hilary of Cowichan Lactation, a mother of two, midwife and lactation consultant. She wanted a motherhood session with her two daughters and a few relaxed portraits at the end for branding her business in a genuine and down to earth way. The morning golden hour was magical on the leaves and frost, and her girls were so fun and playful.
On a side note, to celebrate Hilary’s work: I remember one of the best pieces of advice I was given during pregnancy was to not just read up on birth, but to really research breastfeeding, because when suddenly it’s all happening and it’s a lot harder than expected, that knowledge is power. I was so lucky to have good breastfeeding support and it made all the difference.
